Mexico’s eccentricities are everywhere. There are venders of huge balloons and cotton candy in every town, a love of wrestling and bloody news programming, and a fascination with plastic baby dolls and religious iconography. Here’s some of the things I observed.

Mexican fascination with lucha libre [pro wrestling] was evident.

The paste up aesthetic—nudie photos, health remedies, lucha libre, cartoons, etc.

7-11 is doing well in Mexico. Frozen burritos and slurpees were readily available all over the country, especially in the north.

The newsstand is an institution—a source of news [and television, sometimes] for those who can’t afford it. Memin,
the cartoon in monkey in black face, is very popular—and very racist.

A fine collection of boobs, butts, and racing cars.

Mexico’s mannequins are freakish. The ones on the right had hit a new peak—all of them looked like they were in some stage of torture.

Plastic baby dolls were another fascination. You could buy a part of one, the whole thing, or find one waiting for you on a park bench.

Church paraphernalia clusters around cathedrals—the first in Real del Catorce and the later in Mexico City.

A full range of religious statues and prayer cards in very Catholic Puebla.

Friday night worship in one of Mexico City’s main churches.

I love the old trucks. They were usually brimming with something in the back.

A common afternoon pastime—hanging out at the gas station with your truck [a lot like places in America.]

Some people braved the insane traffic on bike, but it wasn't very common.

Traveling on the train, or the web in the proverbial—and packed—internet café.

Ways of getting around, and selling your wares, in Mexico City.

Why even put a table out? Your bakery is the bed of your hatchback.

The armies of men, and intimidating arcade games, in a Mexico City bus station on night.

The line up in the bus station to points south from the capital.

Economies of scale are good in business….

Especially if you are selling Sponge Bob balloons.
